We just began manufacturing a blue suede Serenity Sack which is designed specifically for the aging population of Elvis lovers. I envision versions of our Serenity Sack that are bedazzled better than the clothes worn by Elvis himself. After much research we figured that Elvis fans are a prime demographic to go after in the coming years. Okay, this may be a lie. We are not making Elvis styled Serenity Sacks (although I totally want to now). However, I did get a chance to go to Graceland last week. I was never a big fan of Elvis, but after going there I have a newfound respect for this man. He was a very generous and giving person. And of course talented as well. I can understand the obsession people had and still have for him.
Walking through Graceland I realized that it’s the exact opposite of what we are trying to do with Serenity Sack. Our goal is to have the smallest impact on the world when we are gone by avoiding permanent memorials. Graceland is the polar opposite. It is a giant permanent memorial to a single person and it will be in place for generations to come. Unlike most people, Elvis continues to have a huge impact on the world long after his death. So it only makes sense that he has a memorial of this magnitude in his honor.
Although I’m against the idea of creating memorials for the average person, I still believe memorials and gravesites are sometimes a necessary and important part of our culture. For instance, people who have died defending our country and others who have truly impacted the world in some way still deserve a memorial. This is definitely one of those cases. Graceland is a wonderful tribute to a truly amazing person. I highly recommend it.
…and yes, that is indeed John Stamos in the photo below. He narrates the audio tour of Graceland. Surprisingly, he did a really good job.
